Ever since I first sipped this in February 2024, it has stayed at the top of my list for black teas — and for all teas. Mei Leaf Tea sells it as “Souchong Liquor;” it is a Tong Mu Zhengshan Xiaozhong. This is not a smoked Lapsang, so very different from the Lapsang Souchongs you might have tried.
Mei Leaf’s tasting notes are “dark cocoa, charred bourbon casks and rambutan” (I had to look up that last, which is a crazy-looking fruit). My own take is a deep slightly nutty flavor with a touch of burnt sugar, a lovely bourbon-esque lingering taste, and a pretty red color.
It is one of my go-to teas on writing days. Or reading days. Or pretty much any day.
Here are some links. I am unaffiliated with Mei Leaf Tea.
